Parent Corner:  How Can I help my Child in Sixth Grade?

Parents will often ask me, "What can I do?"  So, here are some thoughts from me that you can do to help your sixth grader:

1.  Use multiplication flash cards or a website with them to reinforce the basic facts and increase their recall time for these facts.

2.  Read the same book and discuss it after every few chapters.

3.  Encourage reading for pleasure and set aside time to do it as often as possible.  If you model readomg, they will feel encouraged.

4.  Ask for the Family Letter that I hand out at the start of each math chapter.  Do some of the activites outlined.

5.  Check in each night and have them share their agendas with you.

6.  Several nights before a science or social studies test work with them on making flash cards from their study guides and use them to prepare for the upcoming test.

7.  Have them share their writing pieces with you.  Feel free to offer editing and revision ideas you have.

8.  Encourage and model organization.  Sit down periodically with your child and their binder to be sure it remains organized.

9.  Be sure you receive the Weekly Report sheet every Friday afternoon.  They are due back to school with your signature every Tuesday.

10.  Place responsibiltiy on their shoulders!  They can do it if they know the expectations.

11.  Call me or email me with any questions or concerns before they become bigger issues.  I will respond quickly and work with you to make 6th grade a positive experience for everyone!
